ACP: What Actually Changed This Week
Although public attention has largely focused on Etsy’s role as the first visible adopter of the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), new signals suggest the rail is quietly expanding to additional merchant categories.
Several mid-sized SaaS and digital-service providers have begun testing ACP-initiated purchases, where an AI agent performs cart creation, SKU selection, or payment initiation on behalf of a user.
Three developments stand out:
ACP is becoming an API product, not a single integration
Stripe appears to be packaging ACP for broader merchant access.Merchants no longer need a direct relationship with OpenAI
Instead, ACP functions as a payments layer beneath agentic interfaces.Early metrics suggest uplift in mobile conversions
Particularly in scenarios where the agent handles SKU selection and reduces friction around checkout.
ACP is not yet “mainstream,” but the quiet experimentation underway strongly suggests it is becoming the default commerce rail for LLM agents.
